This study presents a set of mechanisms oriented to the development of academic communication skills in higher education. Through descriptive analysis, various national and international experiences were reviewed and eight types of initiatives were identified. Reflection on their advantages and disadvantages led to the systematization of traits and a classification ranging from the most to the least institutionalized. The article also presents proposed strategies for favoring an academic culture of successful university education. The conclusion is that this material is indispensable for academics interested in taking charge of the explicit teaching of reading, writing, and oral expression in higher education.
