Abstract

MARTIN ALCARAZ, Alicia  and  ESCALANTE FERNANDEZ, Carlos. Educational Practices, “The Language Problem”, and Indigenous Uses of Reading and Writing in the Historiography of Education in the 19 th Century in Mexico. RMIE [online]. 2017, vol.22, n.73, pp.347-366. ISSN 1405-6666.

The historiography of education in Mexico has described indigenous educational processes in such a way that they have become a specific field of knowledge. In this text, we intend to review the published work on indigenous education of the 19th century and emphasize three relevant topics of study: educational practices, the language issue, and indigenous uses of reading and writing. Historians agree that the 19th century was when the conditions for constructing public schools were developed; and at the end of the century, the bases of the modern educational system were established. Therefore, it is of interest to show the role indigenous education played in this process.

Keywords : history of education; history of Mexico; educational research; indigenous education; educational system.
