Abstract

SILVA LAYA, Marisol. Three Initiatives for Educational Equality in Mexico City Universities. RMIE [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.80, pp.43-68. ISSN 1405-6666.

This article organizes the results of three studies on initiatives aimed at educational equality in two universities: one public university and one elite private university. The two schools coincide in their commitment to equality. Based on a conceptual framework that articulates social justice and educational equality, an evaluation is made of access and continuance, as well as the compensation of disadvantages in both stages. The results reveal significant achievements in the universities’ inroads into vulnerable populations, in their attempt to offer attention proportional to sector needs, through various strategies. Two challenges are transcendent: assuming the costs of meeting needs in a proportional form while abandoning criteria of equality, and shifting the universities’ focus from the population’s deficits to take advantage of the wealth of diversity. This modification requires pedagogical innovation in order to expand abilities.

Keywords : social justice; equality; higher education; students; pedagogy.
