Abstract

LANGA ROSADO, Delia. The Price of Attending Spanish Universities for Working-Class Students: The Impact of the 2012 Reform of University Rates, in Student Discourse. RMIE [online]. 2020, vol.25, n.86, pp.603-625.  Epub Dec 02, 2020. ISSN 1405-6666.

Based on the qualitative analysis of discourse of working-class students, we addressed their experiences as university students in the Spanish context, where important changes have affected the conditions of entering and remaining in the university. We observed that attending a university has become more costly and uncertain, and therefore less attractive for working-class students. We believe that this finding is related to the reduction in university enrollment that has occurred since the implementation of new university policies in 2012. In any case, the new conditions do not seem to contribute to solving the problems of efficiency and inequality in Spain's university system.

Keywords : higher education; students; educational inequality; social classes; university policy.
