Abstract

BRITO, Olivier  and  ORELLANA, Rosa. Disempowerment of Teachers: A View from the Experience of Retiring Teachers. RMIE [online]. 2021, vol.26, n.90, pp.867-886.  Epub Oct 11, 2021. ISSN 1405-6666.

In recent decades, educational systems have undergone important changes, including the bureaucratization and standardization of teaching. At the same time, the teaching profession has experienced transformations that have reduced its autonomy and capacity for action. This research analyzes the narratives of five retiring female teachers in Chile. We conclude that during the dictatorship, the severe repression was not pedagogically paralyzing; faced with the impossibility of teaching in a critical manner, the teachers worked in proximity with the local community to acquire knowledge and professional skills. Paradoxically, democracy and the modernization of the educational system have reduced their possibilities to apply this knowledge. The teachers feel relegated to a technical role, and gradually disempowered in their professional life.
