Abstract

Concern about failure and dropping out of higher education has intensified in recent decades due to the increased numbers of students, the interest in improvement and educational quality, and to the important role that higher education plays in economic and social progress. This article compiles the main lines of research on the topic and presents a descriptive, cross-sectional case study on failure and dropping out of the major in Social Education at Universidad de Castilla in La Mancha, Spain. The objectives are to identify the causes behind the phenomena and the identifying characteristics, and to improve lines of improvement. The results show the relation of failure and dropping out with the economic situation, motivation/vocation, health, and participation in university life.
