Abstract

KLIKSBERG, Bernardo. Hacia una nueva visión de la política social en América Latina: Desmontando mitos. Pap. poblac [online]. 2002, vol.8, n.34, pp.9-42. ISSN 2448-7147.

This article shows the social policy limitations in Latin America in the current context of economic, social and political transformation. It later proposes some ideas to cope with the regional social deterioration problem. It starts by analyzing the tendencies of some social problems affecting the region -poverty, social inequality, job deterioration, access to health and education, the status of the infant population and violence and insecurity. The author's argument states that it is necessary to establish a new social policy that can enclose Ethics and Economics, and that can distance itself from current myths and misconceptions about the superfluous role of social policy -an idea implicit in the neo-liberal premise that the only social policy is economic policy. The author then points out the importance of the State and society participation in social policy for achieving a sustainable and integral social development.
