Abstract

PAULI, Julia. Residencia posmarital y migración: un estudio de caso de grupos domésticos en el Valle de Solís, estado de México. Pap. poblac [online]. 2002, vol.8, n.34, pp.191-218. ISSN 2448-7147.

Numerous Mesoamerican ethnographies have demonstrated the existence of a specific regional household system. Two of its main characteristics are virilocal residence and ultimogeniture although this system is the dominant pattern I show that under specific circumstances a change becomes probable. National and international migration generate a number of consequences for the economic and social structure of rural Mexican communities. As others have shown before a significant amount of remittances goes into housing. Given this spending preference the question arises in how far postmarital residence, namely virilocal residence, changes due to new income opportunities and the new dwelling space for the younger generation. Using ethnographic data on migration and fertility patterns, postmarital residence behavior and economic performance collected in a community of the Valle de Solís, state of Mexico, during the years 1996, 1997, 2000 and 2001 the process of this change will be described and explained.
