Abstract

CORTES, Fernando. El ingreso y la desigualdad en su distribución. México: 1997-2000. Pap. poblac [online]. 2003, vol.9, n.35, pp.137-152. ISSN 2448-7147.

This article describes the patterns and distribution of household income in Mexico, and identifies the most significant components of the change in the levels of inequality for the last 25 years. It starts by describing the evolution of the average household income according to per capita income deciles, and continues by analyzing the changes in the distribution of household income and its corresponding Gini coefficient. It also analyzes the contribution of the four most important income sources in the construction of the Gini coefficient. The database used in this article is the "National Household Income Survey" (ENIGH in Spanish) for the years 1977, 1984, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000. In order to take into account household size, and thus avoiding the inclusion of large domestic units in higher deciles due to their higher total income, the tables in this article show the distribution of income sorted by monetary income per capita instead of presenting the distribution of income according to total income deciles.
