Abstract

HAM CHANDE, Roberto. Income, occupation and cohort transition to old age. Pap. poblac [online]. 2003, vol.9, n.37, pp.167-191. ISSN 2448-7147.

The Retrospective Demographic Survey and its links with the National Demographic Dynamics Survey are used to review the social and economic features of the 1936-1938 cohort life-course. Socio-economic characteristics are examined for the surviving members of the cohort in 1997 -when they were between 60 and 62 years old. Historic paths are analyzed, stressing the demographic, educational and occupational characteristics of this group. The main hypothesis is that past conditions lived by this group shape their present life. Paths are sketched for each sex, by rural and urban context, and by analyzing their educational and labor force participation characteristics. Social security gaps, occupation and low income are present in this cohort, despite the fact that they contributed significantly towards the industrial development and economic growth in the country.
