Abstract

TUNON, Esperanza  and  NAZAR, Austreberta. Gender, formal education and sexuality in single teenagers of south-eastern Mexico. Pap. poblac [online]. 2004, vol.10, n.39, pp.159-175. ISSN 2448-7147.

The text describes various aspects of sexuality in single teenagers of south-eastern Mexico, and evaluates, from a gender perspective, the effect of schooling on the age at the beginning of sexual relations and unions, the use of contraceptive methods, and pregnancy. It is concluded that education has a stronger effect on the age at the beginning of sexual relations among women than among men. Furthermore, it is concluded that amongst both schooling is significantly related to early unions and contraceptive use, and that there is no relation between the education level and the probability of pregnancy. Additionally, gender-related differences in values regarding sexuality, and the assumption of maternity and paternity were found.

Keywords : teenagers; gender; sexuality; schooling; singleness.
