Abstract

BOADO, Marcelo  and  FERNANDEZ, Tabaré. Changes in the income social distribution in Uruguay from 1998 to 2003. Pap. poblac [online]. 2005, vol.11, n.44, pp.43-81. ISSN 2448-7147.

This article checks the change happened in the social distribution of income before and after the long and deep economic crisis initiated in 2000 and that was culminating two years later with the triad of dispossession, devaluation and freezing of the bank deposits in five of the more important national institutions. The information comes from the micro data generated by the Anual Survey of Households for the period 1998- 2003. The principal variable in the analysis is the current income perceived by the members of the household for any concept the month previous to the accomplishment of the survey, expressed in constant income of December, 2003. By means of the use of descriptive statisticians for the period 1998-2003, is observed how it has changed the monetary average revenue of the households in constant weight, and its dispersion, distinguishing between Montevideo and urban localities of the rest of the country. Next we present Gini's coefficients that show an steady increase of the inequality for the six considered years.

Keywords : distribution of income; income; economic crisis; social inequality; Montevideo; Uruguay.
