Abstract

WELLER, Jürgen. Problems of the labour insertion of the young population in Latin America. Pap. poblac [online]. 2006, vol.12, n.49, pp.09-36. ISSN 2448-7147.

Contrary to certain expectations, during the nineties and the first years of the present decade, the conditions of the integration of young people into the labor market have not improved. In this article the main hypothesis about the high youth unemployment are reviewed and, based on a special processing of household surveys of three countries (Argentina, Costa Rica, and Venezuela), the effect of different variables (education, gender, socio-economic characteristics of the household, the economic cycle) on the labor market integration of young people is analyzed. By observing elements of the labor market trajectories of specific age cohorts, a dynamic perspective is included.

Keywords : labor market; youth; youth unemployment; labor market trajectories; Latin American; Argentina; Costa Rica; Venezuela.
