Abstract

RENTERIA PEREZ, Elisenda; MALDONADO TURRA, Cássio  and  LANZA QUEIROZ, Bernardo. Grandparents and grandchildren living together, a better life for the youngest? The cases of Brazil and Peru. Pap. poblac [online]. 2007, vol.13, n.52, pp.47-75. ISSN 2448-7147.

This paper analyzes the impacts of living with an elderly person to the children's well-being, comparing the cases of Brazil and Peru. Public transfers to the elderly and its spillover effects are of great interest. Population aging is fast in both countries, however, the public transfer system to the elderly is very different between them. Whereas in Brazil the social security system is very generous, in Peru there is a very weak social security system. We find that the presence of an elderly in the household affects positively the accumulation of human capital and health care both in Brazil and Peru.

Keywords : demographical aging; elderly people; households; international transfers; Brazil; Peru.
