Abstract

GARZA, Gustavo. Metropolitan urbanization in Mexico: regulations and socieconomic characteristics. Pap. poblac [online]. 2007, vol.13, n.52, pp.77-108. ISSN 2448-7147.

The objectives of this paper are, in the first place, to analyze the evolution of the urban system in Mexico from 1980 to 2005, in order to demonstrate the increasing concentration of population in the metropolises with more than five hundred thousand inhabitants; secondly, the productivity of the fifty-six existing metropolises as well as their endemic poverty, housing deficit, structural underemployment and their indexes of metropolitan human development are examined, all of this with the aim of determining the seriousness of their socio-economic problematic. Finally, some reflections on the issues of governance and administration of the cities are presented, considering that their good performance is indispensable for the correct operation of the private companies and, therefore, for the country's international competitiveness.

Keywords : urbanization; urban system; demographical concentration; metropolises; Mexico.
