MONTOYA-ARCE, B. Jaciel  and  MONTES-DE-OCA-VARGAS, Hugo. Labor situation of the elderly in the State of Mexico. Pap. poblac [online]. 2009, vol.15, n.59, pp.193-238. ISSN 2448-7147.

This articles presents and analysis of the economic participation of the elderly people (60 years of age and older) in the State of Mexico. The results show that both economic participation and the socio-demographic characteristics change with age. Most of the elderly people who work do it in the agricultural sector. Both men and women work for nearly seven hours a day, however women receive a notably lower average wage. The characteristics positively associated to economic participation are: masculine gender, have a good or excellent physical health, have labor experience, live alone and abide in rural localities. On the other side, circa 40 percent of the elderly declare they like to learn a trade and they would accept a job if they were offered one.

Keywords : old age; demographic aging; State of Mexico; pensions; economic participation; socio-demographic characteristics.
