Abstract

SANTIAGO-CRUZ, María de Jesús. The dynamics of migration in the context of recent migration: a new pattern?. Pap. poblac [online]. 2009, vol.15, n.60, pp.99-121. ISSN 2448-7147.

Based on information from rural migrants in Campeche, Mexico, to the United States, we empirically study the dynamics of international rural migration. We find both a significant acceleration of migration in the last five years, and that most migrants were already incorporated into the labor market before leaving. In the structure of family income remittances are central and affect the distribution of rural income. It is demonstrated that, in the logic of migrants, remittances are seen as a means to ensure a current standard of living to their families and not targeted specifically to productive use.

Keywords : rural migration; income; remittances; Campeche.
