Abstract

GONZALEZ, Diego Enrique  and  GONZALEZ, Humberto. Socio-demographic experiences in a context of underdevelopment and negative demographic growth. Pap. poblac [online]. 2009, vol.15, n.60, pp.150-174. ISSN 2448-7147.

In Cuba the population has begun to diminish and, at the same time, accelerated aging has also begun. This phenomena impose acute challenges to this society where the old "Malthusian population problem" by opposed other of decrease in the number of inhabitants is replaced of unquestionable way. This panorama is recreated in the present article through probable social and demographic scenes in the largest of the Caribbean islands, which can be used as near reference for other countries of the region. The convenience of timely disclosing exercises of this type-where different alternatives on future behaviors from the population as far as their volume and composition by gender and age appear- consists in putting into the hands of civil employees, academics and politicians a tool of high utility for the formulation of policies that allow modifying or counteracting demographic tendencies of undesired effects.

Keywords : social and demographic scenes; low fertility; population decrease; accelerated aging; population; development; Cuba.
