Abstract

HERNANDEZ-BRINGAS, Héctor  and  NARRO-ROBLES, José. Homicide in Mexico, 2000-2008. Pap. poblac [online]. 2010, vol.16, n.63, pp.243-271. ISSN 2448-7147.

We present a review of the occurrence of homicides in Mexico for the 2000-2008 period, which was undertaken on the basis of vital statistics data from the National Institute of Geography, Statistics and Computing and the National System of Public Security; the sources present significant differences between each other: the amount differs, on average, in two thousand casualties yearly, which represent circa 15-20 percent of the annual figure of homicides; nevertheless, they agree on pointing out the year 2008 as the moment of upturning for this kind of crimes in the Mexican Republic, particularly in five federal states: Baja California, Chihuahua, Durango, Guerrero and Sinaloa. We underscore the fact that the increment of homicides arises after applying a governmental strategy of frontal fight against organized crime started in 2007.

Keywords : organized crime; homicide; mortality; drug trafficking; public security; Tijuana; Ciudad Juarez; Culiacan; Mexico.
