Abstract

GIL-ALONSO, Fernando; BAYONA-I-CARRASCO, Jordi  and  VONO DE VILHENA, Daniela. Latin-Americans' internal migration spatial patterns in Spain: from economic boom to crisis. Pap. poblac [online]. 2012, vol.18, n.71, pp.9-50. ISSN 2448-7147.

In Spain, foreigners have very intense internal flows, therefore strongly redistributing population throughout the country. This paper intends to focus on the 1.7 million Latin-American citizens, one of the country's main foreign origins. Though their basic demographic and social characteristics have already been identified -e.g., both the stock and the flows are mainly female, they mainly work in the service sector...-, much less is known on their internal migration patterns. The two main aims of this article are to analyse the volume and predominant directions of these internal flows, and to examine the crisis' impact on them. Both the movements among and within provinces are studied, the latter paying special attention to suburban mobility in Madrid and Barcelona metropolitan areas. "Estadística de Variaciones Residenciales" (residential variation statistics) flow data and "Padrón continuo" (local register) stock data are used for it.

Keywords : foreign migration; internal migration; suburbanisation; Latin-American population; Spain.
