Abstract

LEHNER, María Paula. Decisions about descendency: Buenos Aires 1930-1960. Pap. poblac [online]. 2012, vol.18, n.71, pp.271-296. ISSN 2448-7147.

In the 1930s, Argentina completed its process of demographic transition. Thereafter, the urban middle classes showed a preference for small families. In the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires, between 1930 and 1960 the couples who managed to control descendency did so in a context characterised by a strong rethoric favouring birth and by the predominance of traditional contraceptive methods. The aim of this work is to analize the reproductive decisions of urban middle classes, focusing on the possibilities of establishing an internal dialogue in the couple about the arrival of children, with a view to know the preferences about descendency and the motivations to control it.

Keywords : reproductive decisions; families; women; urban middle class; Argentina.
