Abstract

PARTIDA-BUSH, Virgilio. Migration to and from 16 metropolitan areas of Mexico: An historic reconstruction 1965-2010. Pap. poblac [online]. 2013, vol.19, n.76, pp.9-51. ISSN 2448-7147.

The lack of the municipality of previous residence in Mexican population censuses, except in 2000 and 2010, has brought out a distorted idea of the internal migration trends in Mexico. Because it is only put attention in immigration, or because it is approximated by the interstate migration and the intrastate movements are left aside, some authors conclude a decrease in intensity with the turn of the new century. I estimate flows to and from 16 metropolitan areas from data of population censuses since 1970 to 2010 and 2005 and household sample surveys in those cities. It is concluded that changes in the intensity and direction of migration flows are not necessarily located in the new millennium.

Keywords : Internal migration; urbanization; demographic estimation.
