Abstract

AGUILAR-BARCELO, José G.; MUNGARAY-MOCTEZUMA, Ana B.  and  RAMIREZ-URQUIDY, Martín. Gender and self employment in México during the recession of 2008-2009: a study of labor mobility. Pap. poblac [online]. 2014, vol.20, n.80, pp.145-191. ISSN 2448-7147.

Using microdata from the National Survey of Occupation and Employment we analyze empirically the evolution of labor mobility within occupational categories related to self-employment in Mexico during the 2008-2009 recession. We classify the population according to some labor and social variables to help to identify patterns of gender-differentiated behavior. We found that women are more sensitive than men to the economic cycle. Even so, evidence about the origin of the increase in participation of female self-employment activities in recent years is mixed. Furthermore, although this seems to be largely due to a shelter (push) effect, it also exist positive correlation between labor mobility and GDP growth related to entry into self-employment and the transition to other entrepreneurial behaviors that would indicate an innovative (pull) effect, groups of women.

Keywords : Gender; self-employment; labor mobility; recession.
