Abstract

WELTI CHANES, Carlos. The national population council. 40 years of the institutionalization of the population policy in Mexico. Pap. poblac [online]. 2014, vol.20, n.81, pp.25-58. ISSN 2448-7147.

In a tour of 40 years of activities of the National Population Council of Mexico, created in 1974, this article is a reflection about the role played for this organization to accomplish the goals of an explicit population policy in trying to diminish the population growth and improving the living conditions of the Mexican population. The text tries to make clear the limitations of the Council, to influence the evolution of demographic variables beyond reducing the natural population growth, by diminishing the level of fertility through the promotion of a massive use of contraceptives.

Keywords : Population policy; evaluation of public policies; Mexico; National Population Council.
