Abstract

TERRON-CARO, Teresa  and  MONREAL-GIMENO, María Carmen. Migrant women in transit on the northern border of Mexico: motivations and expectations socio-educational before the American dream. Pap. poblac [online]. 2014, vol.20, n.82, pp.138-166. ISSN 2448-7147.

The analysis of migration from the perspective of gender, can not be equally related between the motivations and expectations of migrant women to those of men. In our research we focus mainly on four reasons: economic, family reunification, search for better personal expectations, and related family situations. Most of the women interviewed, began the trip on their own, taking an active role in migration. We note that those who travelled for family reunification used to have a lesser role in decision-making and preparation for the trip. Those who had offspring, did not have sufficient resources for the welfare of children. That was the most important motivation for the search of a more qualified and better economic and educational conditions for their sons / daughters. Their educational level showed differences.

Keywords : Gender; international migration; motivations; socio-educational expectations.
