Abstract

MARQUEZ SCOTTI, Clara. Determinants of unemployment in Mexican cities: Continuities and ruptures in a crisis period. Pap. poblac [online]. 2015, vol.21, n.83, pp.101-134. ISSN 2448-7147.

Unemployment has not been a priority in demographic and sociological studies in Mexico because it was not the most urgent and widespread phenomenon in the region. However, the current economic crisis has caused an increase in the unemployment rate and consequently the attention of analysts and researchers to the unemployment phenomenon. This article is guided by three main objectives. The first one is to analyze the individual determinants of unemployment and discouraged unemployment in Mexican cities, both in a stability period (2006) and in a recessive one (2009). The second one is to investigate if there are unequal affectations according to the occupational class on the probability of being unemployed. Finally I want to question the old assumption that, in Mexico, unemployment is a phenomenon that only affects the middle and upper classes.

Keywords : Open unemployment; discouragment; hidden unemployment; occupational class; crisis.
