Abstract

MONTEIRO, Lucía  and  PAREDES, Mariana. Family arrangements during elderliness in Uruguay: specific profiles for the social protection system. Pap. poblac [online]. 2016, vol.22, n.87, pp.133-160. ISSN 2448-7147.

This article aims to analyze family arrangements during elderliness in Uruguay as well as their implications for the design and implementation of public policies. Uruguay is an interesting case for two reasons. First, it is one of the eldest countries in the region. Second, family arrangements during elderliness are different from those in the region, predominating single households and nuclear households without kids. Moreover, elderly women are becoming particularly vulnerable due to the feminization of elderliness and the process of aging. In the context of the implementation of a new social protection system in Uruguay, which partly focuses on vulnerable and dependent elderly, this paper sheds light on two different questions. How could family arrangements contribute to the social protection system's design? Which aspects promote vulnerability among elderly's households?

Keywords : Elderliness; gender; care policy.
