Abstract

GONZALEZ-GONZALEZ, César Alfredo et al. Aging and mortality: health, economic and family conditions in the last year of life of the elderly in Mexico. Pap. poblac [online]. 2018, vol.24, n.97, pp.43-62. ISSN 2448-7147.  https://doi.org/10.22185/24487147.2018.97.24.

Little is known on what happens in the last year of life of the aging population. Mexico has demographic, economic, social and epidemiological characteristics that raise concerns about the challenges that aging will impose. The objective is to analyze the last year of life of the Mexican elderly population and describe the state of health, physical functioning, use of health services and family support that they had before death. We used information from the Mexican Health and Aging Study (ENASEM). The results indicate that during the last year of life, the presence of chronic diseases, difficulty in activities of daily living, support from the family and the use of health services are a constant for both the individual and the family.

Keywords : Aging; mortality; hospitalization; chronic diseases; living arrangements.
