Abstract

SILVA, Eliud; ISLAS-CAMARGO, Alejandro  and  GUERRERO, Víctor M.. Preliminary excess mortality measured through temporary life expectancy in Mexico after the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Pap. poblac [online]. 2022, vol.28, n.113, pp.13-69.  Epub Aug 21, 2023. ISSN 2448-7147.  https://doi.org/10.22185/24487147.2022.113.19.

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused many deaths around the world. In fact, if the prevalence of the infection continues, it is expected to decrease life expectancy. From a demographic perspective, the main feature of Covid-19 is its differential effect on age groups, having the worst effect on the elderly people. We estimate temporary life expectancies for each of three age groups by sex, at the national as well as the state level. The method used to estimate life expectancy uses an approach based on Controlled Smoothness of a time series trend, both globally and by segments. This approach is considered suitable to identify the differential effects of each selected age group. For the 41 to 85 year-old group, we estimate a reduction in temporary life expectancy at the national level, between year 2020 (when it reached its minimum value) and the year where it reached its maximum, 3.5 years for men and 1.6 for women.
