Abstract

ALVARADO-MEDELLIN, Pedro; AGUILAR-ESCARCIA, Silvia Paulina; RAMIREZ-AGUILERA, Atziry Magaly  and  ORTIZ-GOMEZ, Ruperto. Dynamic system for monitoring and control wireless sensor networks operating under ZigBee comunication protocol. Ing. invest. y tecnol. [online]. 2019, vol.20, n.1. Currently, wireless sensor networks (WSN) are an alternative for data control and analysis in different applications. The development of a WSN encompasses two main tasks: the design of the nodes and the development of the application for monitoring and analyzing the data collected. In this research the design and construction of a dynamic system for monitoring and control a wireless sensor network that operates under the ZigBee protocol is described. The system allows to have an interactive communication with the sensors, to manipulate the number of nodes of the network as well as to manage the data control of the communication system allowing to obtain information about physical variables and transmit these to a server, and on the other end a computer application where the user can manage the sensors information and the communication system. One of the main advantages of the system is its computer application that presents high scalability allowing it to cover a large number of sampling sites and collect data in time intervals which are defined by the user based on the specific needs of the phenomenon analyzed. The existing duplex communication between the nodes and the computer application enables a high efficiency in data processing and prevents saturation in the communication network when the number of nodes deployed in field are numerous. As a case of study, the system was applied to monitor hydraulic variables (flow, pressure and level) on water supply distribution network in Calera de Víctor Rosales, Zacatecas, México. The design of the system presented a good performance when processing, storing and visualizing the information coming from the nodes, however the increase in the number of nodes deployed in fiel or the decrease in latency directly affects communication index due to ZigBee protocol features.
