Abstract

MIGUEL-VELASCO, Andrés Enrique; MALDONADO-CRUZ, Pedro; TORRES-VALDEZ, Julio César  and  CRUZ-ATAYDE, Maritza. Entropy as a regional inequality indicator in Mexico. Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2008, vol.8, n.27, pp.693-719. ISSN 2448-6183.

In this paper we analyse regional inequalities trough the concept of regional entropy taking as a reference the regional development in Mexico from the point of view of the human development index between 1950 and 2003. Our hypothesis proposes that regional inequalities have increased as a result of development. Furthermore, in recent times the regional disequilibrium detected through the evaluation of the regional sustainability tends to be higher. As a methodology to measure inequality we propose the use of some concepts such as the absolute and relative entropies of the development indicators, fairness, efficiency and sustainability of the country.

Keywords : regional sustainable development; regional inequalities; regional entropy; fairness; efficiency; sustainability.
