Abstract

VELAZQUEZ-DURAN, Víctor Manuel  and  ROSALES-ORTEGA, Rocío. Competition and cooperation in the formation of a Local Production System: Industrial organization of footwear in Leon, Guanajuato. Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2011, vol.11, n.37, pp.609-644. ISSN 2448-6183.

This paper analyzes the characteristics of the footwear production system in Leon, Guanajuato, emphasizing two contradictory experiences that simultaneously define the organization of production in the system. The first experience is characterized by a social and productive segmentation which is caused by the absence of cooperation between local actors. On the other hand, the second experience is related to the action of an integrated firm that develops industrial governance mechanisms to join in a global value chain. The empirical findings of this investigation are based on 18 interviews to producers and 28 interviews to workers from the footwear industry in León.

Keywords : local productive systems; global value chains; industrial governance and Leon's footwear industry.
