Abstract

ESPINOSA PARRA, Felipe  and  BAILEY BERGAMIN, Gino. Traditional markets in transformation: an alternative reading of urban regeneration prospects. Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2022, vol.22, n.69, pp.545-570.  Epub Oct 16, 2022. ISSN 2448-6183.  https://doi.org/10.22136/est20221702.

There exist three perspectives on the regeneration of traditional markets: the liberal one, as an economic activation, the integral socioeconomic one and the criticism of gentrification. This article presents an alternative view on the regeneration approaches in markets, based on the revision of the concepts of heterogeneity, distributive trade and sustainability, inspired by Max Weber. A documentary analysis of 34 markets in America, Europe and Asia is performed. These three values allow us to understand markets as complex social units, where relevant original values remain to be considered for the endogenous development of cities.

Keywords : Traditional markets; sustainability; globalization; urban regeneration; public markets.
