Abstract

DIAZ CARRION, Isis Arlene  and  CEYCA LUGO, Ariana. Women empowerment and care work impacts on female entrepreneurs in Tijuana (Mexico). Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2022, vol.22, n.70, pp.833-864.  Epub Nov 14, 2022. ISSN 2448-6183.  https://doi.org/10.22136/est20221735.

Men’s limited participation in care work generates a double burden for women because it is them who have to fill in the roles of care-takers and providers. Our aim was to analyze the impact of care work on female entrepreneurs’ empowerment in Tijuana (Mexico) by utilizing mixed methods. The main findings emphasize high levels of female empowerment and a persisting pragmatic egalitarianism. Therefore, female entrepreneurs become providers but without a significant redistribution of care work; which compromises their empowerment processes. Empowerment then continues to be an elusive achievement for women.

Keywords : care work; empowerment; female entrepreneurs; Tijuana.
