Abstract

MORALES GONZAGA, Cindy Adriana  and  BACA TAVIRA, Norma. Touristic space production in coastal territories and its social impacts, the case of Cancun, Mexico. Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2023, vol.23, n.72, pp.547-570.  Epub June 16, 2023. ISSN 2448-6183.  https://doi.org/10.22136/est20231774.

The production of tourist space in coastal territories is analyzed based on Henri Lefebvre’s spatial triad theory. It explores the touristification model in Cancun, recovering its historical development and its impacts as perceived by hospitality workers. The techniques applied were participant observation, review of documentary information and 46 interviews to hospitality workers. We identified that the touristic space in coastal territories produces social inequalities that are also expressed in space, differentiated by the spaces of capital production and reproduction of the labour force, by centralizing services in attracting and satisfying tourists.

Keywords : touristification; social space; inequalities; Cancun.
