Abstract

CORTES-GOMEZ, Cristina; CERVANTES-MARTINEZ, Adrián  and  ARCE-IBARRA, Ana Minerva. Sociocultural valuation of the ecosystem services in coastal areas of the Mexican Caribbean. Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2023, vol.23, n.73, pp.961-990.  Epub Nov 13, 2023. ISSN 2448-6183.  https://doi.org/10.22136/est20231956.

In this study, we used a Hierarchical Analytical Process to conduct a sociocultural valuation of ecosystem services that converge in a lagoon system located north of the Mexican Caribbean. The objective was to know which ecosystem has a greater value for the tourism-fishing cooperatives and a group of stakeholders. The results obtained from both groups, show that the mangrove is the most valued ecosystem and the seagrass the least valued. The perceptions shows the potential of sociocultural assessments in the identification of key elements to work on the sustainable management in coastal areas.

Keywords : valuation; sociocultural; ecosystem services; cooperatives; coastal management.
