Abstract

HERNANDEZ-LARA, Óscar Gerardo  and  BRUNN, Stanley D.. Comparing Google hyperlinks of current urban systems in four Latin American countries in three languages. Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2023, vol.23, n.73, pp.1017-1046.  Epub Nov 13, 2023. ISSN 2448-6183.  https://doi.org/10.22136/est20231813.

We used Google Scholar hyperlinks to measure the positioning of some urban centers in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico. Hyperlink volumes were compared in Spanish, Portuguese, and English to discern differences in search language. Two important findings emerged: first, that each country has a dominant city that is also the city to which most of the others in the same country are linked; second, that there are clearly central, semi-peripheral and peripheral cities in each country. This research lays the groundwork for research on knowledge and information economies in these and other countries.

Keywords : urban primacy; hyperlinks; cores; peripheries.
