Abstract

REY MARTINEZ, Fernando. Political rights of indigenous women in Mexico. Cuest. Const. [online]. 2014, n.31, pp.119-138. ISSN 1405-9193.

This article explores the question of indigenous women as subjects of right to political participation in Mexico. It is a problem of great social importance, both for the number of people affected, such as the extent and intensity of the still existing discrimination in Mexican society that prevents or hinders the exercise of their political rights. The text identifies some risks to a thorough understanding of the problem: the assimilationist model, the radical multicultural, paternalism, over-inclusiveness, and the attitude of the political parties or the recognition of the political rights of indigenous communities without an adequate perspective gender. From the legal point of view, the problem must be traced back to the category of so-called "multiple or intersectional discrimination". The main thesis of this work is that we need to build a political right of indigenous communities from a gender perspective. Indigenous women should be the protagonists of such construction.

Keywords : political rights of indigenous communities; gender discrimination; discrimination against indigenous women; multiple discrimination of indigenous women and gender.
