The article analyses sexual violence against women in armed conflict situations in Latin America. The main items are the link between social and gender violence, the concept of sexual violence in the theory and practice of human rights and its high incidence in conflict situation. In different social spaces, violence against women is invisible (or invisibilized), even if it is extreme. The definition of sexual violence as a crime against humanity is very recent and still controverted. However, important steps have been made in this process.
