In 2007 the Mexico City Legislative Assembly legalized abortion up to 12 weeks into pregnancy. This measure had an immediate impact on women’s possibilities to exercise their reproductive freedom. However, given that effective citizenship requires a subjective appropriation of rights, it is relevant to explore what meanings women attach to legal termination of pregnancy (LTP). This article addresses the issue through analyzing qualitative research which suggests that during the process of LTP, women experience a subjective dispute which is related to a political dispute between different social discourses that struggle for definitions of motherhood, reproduction and rights. These results reveal that LTP constitutes a practice of autonomy for women as a result of the ongoing process of secularization of Mexican society regarding women’s reproductive rights.
