Abstract

MUNOA FERNANDEZ, Eduardo  and  LUZURIAGA URIBE, Estefanía. El macho guayaco: de la calle a las figuras mediáticas. Una primera mirada. La ventana [online]. 2018, vol.6, n.48, pp.139-167. ISSN 1405-9436.

This paper offers the partial results of an investigation aimed at studying the relationship between the emerging adults of the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador and their perception of masculinity stereotypes. The investigation is based on theoretical definitions of cultural identity, stereotypes of masculinity, hegemonic masculinity and finally a definition of the emergent adult. We describe the exploratory study based on the use of a questionnaire structured in four sections. The paper analyzes the results and establishes some preliminary conclusions about male stereotypes perceived and classified as decadent, dominant or emerging. It also analyzes the weight of the patterns of hegemonic masculinity in the construction of the identity representations of the Guayaquil man and the stereotypes that represent him. Finally, the conclusion show that the model of hegemonic masculinity is essential in the construction of the imaginary about Guayaquil masculinity (focusing on the prevalence of stereotypes, the dependence of perception to the hegemonic model and the nature of receptors and emitters of masculinity) and the paper closes with the questions that these conclusions pose to future work.

Keywords : masculinity; stereotypes; identity; emerging adult.
