Abstract

MIRANDA OJEDA, Pedro. Commissariats of the Holy Office Tribunal: Offices and Officials of the Inquisition's Structure in Yucatan, 1571-1820. Desacatos [online]. 2007, n.25, pp.163-190. ISSN 2448-5144.

The foundation of the Holy Office Tribunal constituted an invitation for the participation of New Spain's social elite -both Peninsulares and criollos. The institution's prestige benefited from the social preeminence enjoyed by its officials. Therefore, by analyzing the commissariat and the roles played by its officials, we can understand how the local power structure of the inquisition helped to define its inner workings and created an omnipotent image in the eyes of the colonial society.

Keywords : Holy Office; commissariats; inquisition officials; power; social control.
