This paper presents a brief account of intolerance and ideological persecution, from ancient Greece to the Holy Inquisition and its role in the paralysis of scientific research in Catholic countries such as Spain and Italy; the appearance of biblical criticism during the second half of the 17th Century; the emergence of the notion of academic freedom in the 18th century and the repressive campaign against it that ensued during the following century.
