This article is about the few advances in outreach activities of higher education institutions in Mexico, which obey to the lack of a clear and socially-shared meaning of the term outreach. We propose a typology related to the concepts derived from the actions universities have taken in that direction, mainly from the economic point of view. We also propound the possibility of recognizing outreach activities as a substantive function of higher education institutions, in addition to those assigned to them.
