Abstract

LOPEZ BONILLA, Guadalupe; TINAJERO VILLAVICENCIO, Guadalupe  and  PEREZ FRAGOSO, Carmen. Adolescents, Curriculum and Literary Competence. REDIE [online]. 2006, vol.8, n.2, pp.1-24. ISSN 1607-4041.

In this article we describe the access to literary texts and analyze literacy practices in a particular domain: high school literature class. We adopt a sociocultural perspective in our study of literacy events and practices. In particular, we build on the work of Mary Hamilton and the New Literacy Studies to identify literacy events and its different elements in order to infer the literacy practices that encompass them. The study took place in three different contexts offering two distinct curricular tracks: the general high school track offered in two schools (a Colegio de Bachilleres and a bachillerato federal), and the International Baccalaureate. In the results we discuss the literary competence and type of reader each school culture enables.

Keywords : High school; literacy; literacy competence; literature teaching.
