Abstract

MUNOZ MORENO, José Luis  and  GAIRIN SALLAN, Joaquín. Educational Development in Spanish Cities: The Central Role of Town Councils. REDIE [online]. 2016, vol.18, n.3, pp.81-94. ISSN 1607-4041.

This contribution shows the main results of a study on educational development in cities, as a consultation process between different actors who come together to improve education and conditions in a city. It defines and validates a model based on stages, which entailed a review of literature, 17 in-depth interviews, a discussion group with 11 experts, and its implementation in three town councils so it may be validated by 12 municipal technicians. The results explain the existence of different stages of development and highlight the need for trust, dialog and a consensus to improve community engagement in education. Furthermore, they clearly set out the need to articulate cross-cutting and innovative education policies linked to social development.

Keywords : Educational development; council; community.
