Abstract

VALDEZ ZEPEDA, Andrés  and  LOPEZ ARCE, Bertha Adelina. Social capital and civil mobilization: The case of the social protest around the "placazo" in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara. Espiral (Guadalaj.) [online]. 2009, vol.15, n.45, pp.191-217. ISSN 1665-0565.

The present article analyzes, in view of the theory on social capital, the mobilization and civil protest that was staged at the end of the year 2007 in Guadalajara, to stop the attempt by the state government to reissue license plates for all the vehicles in the state of Jalisco. It is concluded that the success of the civil mobilization generated incentives and helped build social capital, contributing, in addition, to reinforce the civil confidence in protest and mobilization as the society's legitimate instruments of struggle.

Keywords : capital social; movilización ciudadana; intento de reemplacamiento; Zona Metropolitana de Guadalajara; México; democracia; construcción de ciudadanía; protesta social; nuevo movimiento social.
