Abstract

ALONSO, Jorge. Efraín González Luna, catholic politician. Espiral (Guadalaj.) [online]. 2011, vol.18, n.52, pp.129-162. ISSN 1665-0565.

This article attempts to unveil how one of the founders of the National Action Party (PAN), Efraín González Luna, was a politician with a profound catholic education, and promoter of a catholic social doctrine, above all based on the principles of common good and subsidiarity, whose catholic solidarity was founded on solid principles. González Luna accepted the first presidential nomination by the PAN in the 1950’s, based on political analysis and a religious reflection. However, the worst attacks came from the extremist catholic conservative groups. He critically analysed the relationship between catholics and politics. A revealing conflict is examined of his opposition to the transformation of the PAN into a christian democratic party.

Keywords : politics; catholics; Church’s social doctrine; democracy; humanism.
