Abstract

This article addresses the modalities and results of the participatory budget, a direct democracy mechanism that has been used in Mexico City from 2011 to 2017. The paper analyzes the organization of this instrument, as well as the items that were submitted for the consideration of citizens so that their authorities could assign a part of the budget to it. In the same way, the legal regulation that defines the application of these consultations is presented, as well as the functions performed in this process by the local government and electoral institutions, and also the neighborhood organizations. Finally, the results of these exercises are also considered.
