Abstract

VILLAFUERTE SOLIS, Daniel  and  GARCIA AGUILAR, María del Carmen. The backstage of the current political crisis in Nicaragua: internal contradictions and geopolitics. Espiral (Guadalaj.) [online]. 2021, vol.28, n.80, pp.147-184.  Epub June 11, 2021. ISSN 1665-0565.

This article elucidates the recent Nicaraguan conflict beyond what appears to be a spontaneous movement that disrupts economic and social normality. Highlights the structural aspects articulated to the Central American region, and to the pressures of the international environment, in particular from the United States. The hypothesis that lies behind this contribution is that the conflict that began in the spring of 2018 is a symptom of the contradictions accumulated from the unfulfilled promises of the triumph of the Sandinista revolution of 1979 and the way of governing during the last eleven years of the administration of Daniel Ortega.

Keywords : Nicaragua; sociopolitical conflict; Sandinista National Liberation Front; geopolitics; Central America.
